SMU 83 SOUTH FLORIDA 49
UNIVERSITY PARK – Larry Brown certainly gave his players a good going over after their lackluster performance against a Division II opponent back on Monday. It showed in their next game, as everything the SMU Mustangs did wrong against Midwestern State, they did right against South Florida.
The good news result is that the Mustangs are 1-0 in conference play. The bad news is, it doesn’t get any easier for the Ponies. SMU will face the Bearcats in Cincinnati on Saturday before Memphis comes to Moody on Jan. 8.
It’s the gauntlet that is the American Athletic Conference – the conference that has produced the last two national champions.
At least the Mustangs showed improvement in the areas Larry Brown was most concerned about on Monday, especially in the first half of the game. Brown was most concerned about his team’s shot selection and turnovers against Midwestern State. In the first half on Wednesday, the Mustangs shot 56 percent and turned it over only twice while dishing out 13 assists and forcing 10 turnovers on South Florida.
Another good sign is that there might be hope that the the top teams can still be beaten. UConn, the defending national champion, lost its conference opener at home to Temple 57-53 before the Mustangs’ game even began.
