It wasn’t as pretty as some may have liked to see it, but ultimately, Nic Moore and the SMU Mustangs were able to get the job done.
Nic scored 18 of his 23 points in the first half while the Mustangs held the opposition to 33 percent shooting in the same frame to hold off Monmouth 63-51 in front of a Moody Coliseum crowd that was actually less than capacity on this Thanksgiving weekend.
For the early parts of the game, the Monmouth Hawks kept being pesky, getting to within one point with just over eight minutes to go in the first half. But then the Mustangs finally pushed that lead to eight over the next 2 1/2 minutes and finally build a double digit lead with just over two minutes to go in the half.
SMU pushed that to as many as 19 points in the second half, and while the Hawks were able to get that down to the 11-14 point range with less than six minutes to go, they were not able to get any closer.
