UTA 66 @ GRAND CANYON 64
Despite not being able to pull away with a comfortable lead, the Mavs were able to fend off Grand Canyon 66-64 in Phoenix.
UTA took the lead for good with just less than 12 minutes to go in the second half. The Antelopes had just recently taken the lead on free throws from a Jamel Outler technical foul and led 43-40 before Lonnie McClanahan and Julian Harris put the Mavs back on top.
GCU would not go away, as the Mavs were never able to build more than a seven-point lead. The Antelopes got as close as two within the final two minutes, but UTA always had an answer – usually in the form of McClanahan at the free throw line.
McClanahan hit five fouls hots in the last 2:21, finishing with 19 points to lead the Mavs.
“I’m proud of our guys,” coach Scott Cross said. “Grand Canyon played extremely hard. Our guys made big free throws down the stretch and got the big rebounds when we needed to. It’s a huge win for us.”
