It definitely will be a more difficult road for the SMU Mustangs this non-conference season, especially with them still not having a full squad.
With pre-season all-conference selection Markus Kennedy still ineligible, the Mustangs were not able to maintain pace with Gonzaga, falling 72-56 in Spokane.
Granted, just playing the likes of the “Zags” as well as the Indiana Hoosiers – SMU’s next stop – is supposed to boost the Mustangs’ chances at getting to the NCAA Tournament this year. But Larry Brown definitely wants his team to be in a position where they expect to win these games.
For now, they can only look at the footage and see how to fix the offensive struggles they had tonight where they shot just 31 percent and san no one score more than 11 points.
Meanwhile, Gonzaga got 17 from Kevin Pangos and 13 off the bench from Domantas Sabonis. And while SMU did beat Gonzaga on the offensive glass, allowing 16 offensive rebounds is still likely too many for Brown’s taste.
The long shots really hurt the Mustangs, as Gonzaga shot nearly 42 percent from beyond the arc. The game might have been more of a blowout had Gonzaga not been very poor at the free throw line, hitting just 8 of 20 free throws.
