SMU 13 SOUTH FLORIDA 14
UNIVERSITY PARK – So close.
The SMU Mustangs were literally one play and seconds away from getting that first win of the season, only to have Mike White find Andre Davis on a fourth down play to swipe the game away 14-13 in front of a cold, sparse Homecoming crowd at Ford Stadium.
SMU had led this game 13-0 going into the fourth quarter – the first time they had even led at halftime this season. Their defense had been stifling Quinton Flowes and the Bulls since they had failed to convert on fourth and inches at the SMU 15 yard line on their first possession.
But then the Bulls went to White at quarterback after they got the ball at the SMU 48 with over nine minutes to go in the game, and he proceeded to lead them downfield for a touchdown in less than two minutes.
Then, White got the ball back with just over five minutes to go and proceeded to take the Bulls 75 yards, converting on fourth down play after fourth down play until he hit that last pass with four seconds left.
It ruined what was easily SMU’s best defensive game of the year, as prior to tonight the Mustangs had not allowed fewer than 38 points in a game.
